New for 2027 ยท Industrial Edge & Industrial AI

Bring computing, data and AI to the machine, without giving up control.

Industrial Edge puts IT-style apps on rugged industrial PCs right next to your PLCs. Learn how it works, build it yourself, and see where AI genuinely helps automation teams.

Why Industrial Edge

Process data where it's made

Sending every value to the cloud is slow, costly and risky. Edge computing analyzes data on the plant floor and sends on only what matters.

โšก

Real-time decisions

Analyze machine data in milliseconds, right where it's generated, with no round trip to a data center.

๐Ÿ”’

Data stays in the plant

Sensitive production data stays on site, reducing exposure and simplifying compliance.

๐Ÿ“ถ

Keeps running offline

Local apps keep working through internet outages, so production doesn't depend on a connection.

๐Ÿ“ฆ

Deploy like IT, run like OT

Install, update and roll back apps across many machines from one central manager.

How it fits together

The Siemens Industrial Edge ecosystem

Three building blocks: a central manager, edge devices on the plant floor, and the apps that run on them.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ Industrial Edge Management (IEM)

The control center. Onboard edge devices, manage users, and deploy, configure and update apps on every device from one web interface, on premises or in the cloud.

โ–ผ

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Industrial Edge Devices

Rugged SIMATIC industrial PCs (or virtual edge devices) that run apps in isolated containers next to the machine.

โ–ผ

๐Ÿงฉ Edge apps

Ready-made Siemens apps plus your own, working together over a shared data bus.

โ–ผ

๐Ÿญ The plant floor

S7-1200 and S7-1500 PLCs, drives, sensors and any device that speaks OPC UA.

What plants use it for

Real problems Industrial Edge solves

๐Ÿ“ˆ

OEE & performance

Collect cycle times, states and counts from PLCs and turn them into live KPIs without touching the PLC program.

๐Ÿฉบ

Condition monitoring

Watch vibration, temperature, current and pressure trends to catch wear before it becomes downtime.

โšก

Energy transparency

Measure energy per machine, line or product and find the biggest savings.

๐Ÿ”

Quality & anomaly detection

Run AI models next to the process to flag unusual patterns as they happen.

๐Ÿ”„

Retrofit older machines

Add data collection and analytics to existing equipment without rewriting control logic.

โ˜๏ธ

Smart IT/cloud integration

Pre-process at the edge and send only clean, meaningful data to MES, ERP or the cloud.

Workshop ยท 1 day ยท hands-on

Industrial Edge Workshop

Go from an empty edge device to live PLC data, a dashboard, a custom app and an AI model, in one day.

Agenda

  1. Edge fundamentals. Edge vs. cloud, architecture and where Industrial Edge fits in the automation pyramid.
  2. Industrial Edge Management. Onboard an edge device, manage users and explore the app catalog.
  3. Connect the PLC. Configure the SIMATIC S7 Connector and OPC UA Connector to read live tags.
  4. Move the data. Publish and subscribe on the IE Databus; build logic with Flow Creator.
  5. Store & visualize. Log time-series data and build a live dashboard.
  6. Build your own app. Package a simple app as a container and deploy it through IEM.
  7. AI at the edge. Load a trained model into AI Inference Server and score live data.
  8. Security & lifecycle. Hardening, updates, backups and safe system boundaries.

You'll leave able to

  • Explain the Industrial Edge architecture to your team
  • Onboard and manage edge devices
  • Get live PLC data into edge apps
  • Build data flows and dashboards without coding
  • Deploy a custom app and an AI model

Who it's for

Controls engineers, OT/IT integrators and digitalization leads. Basic TIA Portal and networking knowledge helps; our PLC and networking workshops are a great start.

About the workshop

This workshop introduces practical applications of artificial intelligence in industrial automation and manufacturing. You'll explore how AI can help interpret industrial data, recognize patterns, support equipment monitoring, assist with troubleshooting and improve day-to-day operational decisions.

Every concept is tied to a real factory task: condition monitoring, fault investigation, maintenance support and operational analysis. Working with representative industrial data and guided exercises, you'll see how AI complements the PLCs, HMIs and networks you already rely on, rather than replacing them.

Throughout, the emphasis stays on what matters in a plant: data quality, verifying AI-generated results, cybersecurity, and an honest look at the limits of AI in industrial environments.

๐ŸŽฏ You will learn to

  • Explain core AI concepts and how they apply in industry
  • Spot real opportunities for AI in manufacturing
  • Understand data from controllers, sensors, equipment, alarms and production systems
  • Prepare and organize industrial data for analysis
  • Use AI tools for technical research and troubleshooting
  • Identify unusual operating conditions and emerging equipment problems
  • Apply condition monitoring and predictive maintenance concepts
  • Check AI findings against actual data and technical evidence
  • Recognize AI limits, false results, cybersecurity risks and safety requirements
  • Document AI-assisted investigations and recommendations
Class agenda

Four weeks, four labs, one finished project

Week 1

Introduction to AI in industrial automation

  • AI and its applications in manufacturing
  • Conventional automation vs. data analysis vs. AI-assisted decisions
  • Industrial data sources: sensors, controllers, equipment status, alarms and production records
  • Finding practical AI opportunities on the factory floor
  • Using AI tools for technical research and problem solving
  • Data quality, accuracy and verification
Lab 1: Examine an industrial scenario, organize the process information, and use AI to summarize operating conditions and flag areas to investigate.

  • Classroom instruction and key concepts
  • Laboratory exercises and configurations
  • Test results and troubleshooting procedures
  • Conclusions and recommendations

Your notes, lab reports and final project become a portfolio you can show an employer.

Our take

What AI can really do for an automation team

AI is a powerful assistant, not a replacement for good engineering. These are the uses we see paying off today, and the ones we teach.

๐Ÿšจ

Alarm triage

Group alarm floods into root events and summarize what happened, in plain language, for the next shift.

๐Ÿ”ง

Troubleshooting assistant

Turn fault codes, manuals and maintenance history into a ranked list of likely causes and tests to run.

๐Ÿ“‰

Early-warning analytics

Learn each machine's normal behavior and flag slow drift weeks before an alarm limit is reached.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ

Smarter maintenance

Schedule service on actual condition and usage instead of fixed calendars.

๐Ÿ“

Engineering productivity

Draft documentation, explain unfamiliar code and speed up research, with an engineer checking every answer.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

The golden rule

AI advises; proven control logic and safety systems act. We teach where that boundary belongs.
